The process of maintaining a healthy herd/livestock population by providing food and water, housing/safety during winter months for horses unable to return on the range, control herd breeding through gelding or rehoming/adoption, and providing veterinary care as needed to ensure good health and avoid spread of disease. In doing so, rangelands will also remain healthy feeding all livestock and wild animals.
"The traditional role of herd health is to control or eliminate diseases and management inefficiencies that impact on animal welfare or limit productivity. The framework of herd health control is risk monitoring and assessment in conjunction with best farming practices. The implementation of herd health control must be in a practical and economically feasible way" - Science Direct
